Small place with REAL Mexican food. This is where the locals go. I've eaten breakfast here twice while passing through Gila Bend.

We stopped here on a drive from San Diego to Phoenix. The outside is very run down. I was worried. The food is good, definitely home made. The carnitas tacos were good. Her pico was good too. My son had the chicken enchilada kids meal with rice and beans and he loved all of it. The service was great. Very friendly. For Gila Bend, it's good. I would eat here again.

In 2009, Sofia's was where we had our first date. I can't remember which of us picked it but it was just right for authentic fare and lingering while getting to know a little about each other. My partner and I felt the sparks of a kindling romance over the traditional and tasty Mole--we've been together, since and we're married last year. Thank you, Sofia's.

Excellent lunch! Had carne asada tacos and these were some of the best I have ever had. The staff really liked to talk about how they made their food. salsa was excellent and very friendly staff with great service.

Food gets 2 stars, service 4. Staff was nice, but definitely not trained wait staff, she read our total to us out loud and stood over us while we signed and filled in the tip... She wasn't rude it was just awkward. I tried the Gorditas and my husband got a GIANT burrito. My Gorditas were bland and had no kind of sauce, meh. Burritos was okay, best part was the tortilla. I'm not sure what everyone else is talking about on here...

Mmm, yummy. The food was served HOT. Refried beans were good, usually they taste salty at other restaurants. The Jamaica was a little too sweet for my taste buds so I added water and much better. My server was the sweetest person ever. Props to her for holding it down at this hole in the wall, seems popular here for this small town.

Carne asada burrito is a bomb!!!!! Salsa pretty good! It is my second stop here & the same Sofia serving! Too bad that place far from Phoenix !!!!

Excellent chile rellenno and carnitas taco. The place looks rundown on the outside but the food is good and they're friendly. This is a good choice for Gila Bend.

Great place, everything from chips to soda to main entrees were delicious. Nothing short of authentic.

We stopped here on the way to San Diego based on the Yelp reviews and it was definitely worth it! This is a great place to go if you want a delicious and quick meal in lieu of a fast food stop. The food was fresh, authentic and very affordable. We will be coming back next time we are in the area!

The food was delicious! My husband had the 3 enchilada plate. And I had a taco of carne asada and a taco of cabeza de res. in both the meat was flavorful and not dry at all! Delicious! The service was nice and prompt. I recommend this place!

First off, the address is incorrect! Google and yelp say 616 E Pima, but it's actually around 530 W. Pulled up at lunch, and the parking lot was full (usually a good sign!), but it also meant we had to wait nearly an hour for our food. Waited almost 20 minutes to have our order taken before going up to the counter. Chips and salsa are delicious, but they charge extra for refills... Food was bland, but filling. I had the chicken Gordita meal, mother had the chicken tostada. Both were meh

Friendly staff. Good fresh food. I had number 3 ,a flauta, taco and tostada. The chicken used was very good. The guacamole was just OK. Agree chips warm and fresh. Not a fast stop. Seemed like they took care of a couple of walk in regulars, which probably makes economic sense. Unassuming outside , nice decor inside, and clean.

i drive through Gila Bend when i go back and forth between San Diego and Phoenix, usually about every month. ALWAYS stop at Sophie's. She's a hard working lady, always there and puts out awesome food for a very good price. Noticed last time that there are now 3 mexican places in gila bend Used to only be Sophie's. Was concerned. On Sunday, when i stopped there, couldn't help but notice the other two had zero cars and Sophie didn' have an open table. ........guess that says it all.

Best rice I have ever had. Wonderful lunch had the chile relleno burrito and it was large and very tasty.

Sofias is a great option in Gila Bend. The salsa is handmade and so are the chips. I had the Chile rellanos and the veggie burrito which were both delicious and vegetarian. The beans have lard so I didn't get them. Big servings.. Highly recommended.

Sofia's is one of those things that you cant judge from the outside. It looks ratty and run down on the outside, and on the inside, it looks quite the same. However, the dissonance between how it looked and how the food was emerged as soon as the chips and salsa were brought out. Good Mexican places almost always have good chips and salsa. Sofias was no exception. After the chips of which we had about eight bowls, we were given the tacos, burritos, enchiladas, and everything else good and tasty. The food was well made and had great flavor, and the place is small enough that it is pretty quiet and the waitress didn't have to run around to ten different tables. This place is small, yet it makes up for its small stature in great service and delicious food.

I always stop here on my way from ca to az. The food is absolutely delicious. The service was very quick and very inexpensive for what you get! The Carne Asada is one of my favorites! Must try if you're driving through :)

drove from Flagstaff to San Diego, this restaurant was just on this route, nice service and delicious food

Of the very limited dining options in Gila Bend for travelers, this place is likely the best. Most of the options are fairly typical Mexican fare but the salsa and gorditas are strangely good. I'm not sure what they do to the salsa but it's amazing. The gorditas are like little flash fried Mexican pockets of meat topped with cheese, lettuce and tomatoe. A real treat, compared to the many other sub-par restaurant options nearby. Lots of locals and travelers, generally a good sign. Very fair prices. Service is acceptable. Not one of the cleanest places I've eaten but I'll be going back for more the next time I pass through.

This is what you would expect a perfectly cooked and seasoned Mexican meal to taste like! The restaurant was cozy and clean. The owner/waitress was very friendly. I never would have expected to find such great fare in such an out of the way town. Overall it was a solid home run.

Best gorditas. Crispy spongy crust, delicious. Server/cashier was super nice even though place was packed. Will stop here again for gorditas on roadtrips for sure!

The food here is delicious. My father has been coming here for a while and recommended it. We stopped with him and I was so satisfied with their food and friendly service. The portions are big and very good prices. Highly recommended!!!!!!

I stopped in to Sofia's after concluding a meeting at the Town of Gila Bend. The pickings in Gila Bend are pretty slim, but thankfully this place makes up for the lack of restaurants. I had a carne asada burrito and took it to go. While I was there, I did note that the dining area is reasonably clean. The burrito was delicious and filling. I will definitely make this a regular stop when I'm down here for work.

The food was excellent, the service was friendly, we couldn't ask for an extra order of chips, the food arrived so quick. Will defiantly recommend to friends.

Excellent service. Great food. Very nice staff. Oh, but the salsa will set you on fire! :)

Don't let the rustic decor (and the fact that the restaurant is in Gila Bend) fool you!... The food has homemade flair and is simply great. Homemade tortillas and the burritos are enormous! Rode my motorcycle out there for breakfast last week with friends, and the staff knew we were there from out of town, and went out of their way to say "Thanks." The interior of the restaurant is quite small, but they have covered picnic tables outside... I will definitely be back!

This Mexican restaurant has excellent food. The salsa is so good you want to drink it, and the corn tortillas are the best. The carne asada is tasty and not tough. I would give it five stars, but the service, while cheerful, is painfully slow. We waited 30 minutes for our breakfast.

great breakfast burritos, great lunch menu, great prices. Super service very friendly. they have great salsa here.

The biggest reason to stop here are the pleasant proprietors. They were kind and generous. I found the food unremarkable but I probably asked for the wrong dish. After i ordered the 3 tables around me all asked for some quacamole dish and sounded very disappointed when told they were out. Other than a pleasant stop there is little to recommend Sofia's.

I noticed a few negative reviews, but I though they were great. I am partial to Cal-Mex, but having enjoyed eating all over Mexico and the Southwest US and understand styles change (I tend to avoid Mex. Food that has a BBQ sauce influence) Was driving across country (starting in San Diego), and planned for lunch in Gila Bend with Sofia's as a possible stop over. I had the Head Tacos, and they were great ...service was good ...I wish they would open a place in MA.

We would not come back. Very bland boring food. Slow service, brought my partners meal 10 minutes before mine. No alcohol.

I came to work in Gila Bend for a couple of months and Being that its the only Mexican restaurant in town, I was very excited to go there. I was craving some flautas and went there for some. I placed the order to go and couldnt wait to get to my room and gooble down the flautas w/sour cream and guacamole! When I got to my room and discovered that they were Rolled Taquitos, you know the frozen kind you can buy like 100 to a box, I was beyond disappointed and not to mention furious! Flautas are the easiest thing to make and it was a major disappointment. A Mexican restaurant that puts out this type of quick fix doesnt take pride. Since I dont have kitchen access in my hotel and most likely have to return to eat there, being there arent that many choices in town. I held my tongue. I just know not to order that next time.

The food was delicious. I had the carne asada burrito with sour. cream, guacamole and cheese. The other people I was there with got the carnitas and there was no complaints there either.

Very passable Mexican food, and the best you're likely to find in this corner of the state. It's our regular stop when collecting rocks in this region. Never had anything exceptional. Never had anything that wasn't good, either.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
